The other day I was talking to Fairy
Princess Rosie and she was explaining to
me how her human plants vegetables in
England. I found it to be so
interesting that I asked her if she
would do a write up so I could post it
in Mystical Magickal Fairy Garden.

Growing fruit and veggies
By: Fairy Princess Rosie
Don't have a big Garden? No extra space
for fruit and vegetables?
No problem- Try growing your
vegetables and fruit in bags or
containers, I promise it does work!! So
you would love some home grown potatoes
but no room, try this idea - get
yourself a large carrier (plastic) bag
like you find in supermarkets, put in
some good composted soil and add a layer
of seed potatoes, keep on layering when
full tie up the bag handles, make
several large holes in the bag for the
shoots to come out. Hang the bag on a
hook from your fence or deck and when it
time to water the plants take down from
hook, open the bag, water and tie the
bag together again. The holes will allow
for plenty of drainage. You can also
try this with carrots and other root
veggies.
Tomatoes
Using the same type of bag; this time
make holes in one side then fill with
compost, water and tie up , lay it down
with the drainage holes underneath and
slit right across the length of bag, pop
in a couple of tomato plants and, stake
for support. You can lay the bag flat
on gravel for extra drainage. Peas,
beans and other frame plants can be
grown in the same way. It is a good way
of containing that mint too-mint will
take over your garden if you do not
contain it.
Lettuce
Lovely crisp
home grown lettuce is easy with a large
sink washing up bowl, just make some
holes in the bottom add a little gravel
for drainage, fill with your compost and
place your baby lettuce or seeds in. It
is easy to divide the lettuce as it
grows, just place the extra in another
bowl. This is also a great way of
growing a small herb patch. It is very
low maintenance and you can just grow
what you need. This is also a great
idea to do theme herbal gardening. As
an example, you can plant an Italian
herbal patch by planting oregano, curly
leaf parsley, flat leaf parsley, and
basil just to mention a few.
Experiment and see what you can achieve
with some imagination, you can of course
use those pre made growing bags, instead
of the plastic carrier. The whole idea
is to use what space you do have and
grow things that you would love to
grow. If you are new to gardening, this
is perfect to try. All it is going to
cost is a pack of seed, a small bag of
compost and some tender loving care!!
